Participating, since 2019, in the APPEAR (Ancient Panel Paintings: Examination, Analysis, and Research) research project which is being developed at the initiative of the J.P. Getty Foundation, with museums and research institutions on an international scale on the interdisciplinary study of Egyptian funerary portraits of the Roman era. To collect the data, the J.P. Getty Foundation has created a shared online data base onto which the collaborating institutions upload their data.

On behalf of the National Archaeological Museum, the Department of Conservation, Chemical-Physical Research & Archaeometry (with a working group of Mr. I. Panagakos, K. Tsakri, P. Lazaris) and the Department of Prehistoric, Egyptian, Cypriot and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection (with Mrs. A. Grigoraki) participate in the project. For the museum’s participation in the program, the Department of Conservation, Physical-Chemical Research & Archaeometry applies non-invasive innovative technologies and methods, such as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray, Multispectral Imaging (MSI), Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI).

On October 19-21, 2022 the National Archaeological Museum participated in the 2nd International Conference of the APPEAR Project held at the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam with the paper titled “Non-invasive investigations on three ancient mummy portraits at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Challenges and benefits”.
