Dr. Maria Lagogianni-Georgakarakos is an archaeologist, with rich research and literary work and long museum experience.
She graduated with highest degree (1976) and awarded a doctorate (PhD) with highest degree (1983) from the Department of Archaeology and Art History of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During her doctoral thesis and as a postdoctoral researcher she specialized in classical archaeology at the University of Munich (Ludwig Maximilians Universität München, 1977-1982 and 1996-1997) on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service as well as from the German Science Foundation Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung.
Her scientific work includes 115 articles, 3 monographs (two of them in the international series Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani) and the editing of 36 archaeological publications.
During her long career in the Greek archaeological service, her activities focused on issues of protection of antiquities, museum management and cultural promotion. As Director of Museums at the Greek Ministry of Culture, she was coordinator of working groups for the legislative regulation of museum issues, member or chair of organizational committees for the museological and museographic studies for the Greek archaeological museums as well as for the periodic exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture in Greece and abroad. As Director of the Epigraphic Museum and later of the National Archaeological Museum, she supported the extroversion of museums, the dialogue between ancient and modern art and the conversation of cultures with Greek and international synergies.
She curated and organized 22 large-scale archaeological exhibitions in Greece and abroad, digital and photographic exhibitions as well as short films. As an invitee of international cultural organizations, she held numerous lectures in various countries. She is a member of Greek and international scientific institutions and has received awards from Greek and international organizations. Today she is Vice President and Director Emerita of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
