“Remnants”: A visual archaeology of the Familiar”, art exhibition by Athena Misegianni at the Museum Café
The café of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens will host the solo exhibition of the artist Athena Misegianni entitled “Remnants” from March 15 to April 9, 2025.
The exhibition, curated by art historian Eleni Gatsa, explores the transformation of the common and perishable objects into timeless symbols, highlighting them as carriers of memory and personal history.
Athena Misegianni draws inspiration from archaeology, museology and her personal visual practice, creating works that function as fragments of a collective and personal past. Through a process that refers to archaeological excavation, the artist deconstructs and reconstructs everyday objects, ceramic fragments and imprints of perishable materials, giving them new semantic dimensions.
Of particular importance is the use of Japanese paper, which functions as an intermediate material between presence and memory, creating an atmosphere of fragile timelessness. The exhibition is structured in a museum logic, with the works presented as archaeological finds, reinforcing the sense of fragmentation and the constant reshaping of memory.
Her work does not attempt to reconstruct a lost whole, but to highlight the void and the elliptical as narrative mechanisms, inviting the audience to reflect on their relationship with time, loss and the significance of objects in personal and collective history. The exhibition “Remnants” is a visual archaeology of the familiar, where the past and the present intertwine, illuminating the constant need of man to maintain traces of his existence through time.
Admission to the Café is free.
