The Exhibition was presented for the first time in the Glyptothek of Munich in 2004 and then in various European countries. It was based on an idea that was born 17 years ago, and on the research that the University of Munich has begun since 1982 in relation to the colourfulness of ancient statues.

As they appear to us today, ancient sculptures, found in archaeological excavations, are white and some of them preserve only scattered colour traces in parts of their surface. For tracing colour remnants on ancient sculptures new research methods were developed and meticulous analysis processes were implemented to restore the original colours yielding a satisfactory degree of certainty.

Upon reaching that point in research, colours not preserved anymore, which according to the reseach data, originally adorned the sculptures, were applied to casts of known sculptures of Greek and Roman antiquity.

In the exhibition there will be on display 21 casts of known statues, such as the torso of a thorakophoros (cuirass-wearer) from the Acropolis, no. 599, a head of a Youth from the Glyptothek in Munich, and the Peplophoros, no. 679 of the Acropolis.

Moreover, 4 Cycladic figurines, a seashell with blue colour, as well as Cycladic bowls containing colour from the National Archaeological Museum Prehistoric Collection are included in the exhibition.
