The temporary exhibition «Praxiteles» was held at the National Archaeological Museum from 26/7 to 31/10/2007, following the similarly titled exhibition in Louvre, but smaller than that as to the number of exhibits, and somewhat modified as to its content.

There was exhibited a total of 78 ancient works from foreign and Greek museums, such as statue bases bearing the signature of Praxiteles, of the sculptor’s father, Kephisodotus the Elder and his sons, of Kephisodotus the Younger and Timarchus, along with sculptures, bronze statuettes, clay figurines, coins as well as a cast of Hermes from Olympia.

The exhibition was structured in several units.

The first unit included statue bases with the signature of Praxiteles, along with coins depicting statues identifiable with works of the sculptor.

The second unit encompassed a few sculptural works of the 4th cent. B.C., which are linked with the renowned sculptor himself or with his workshop, such as the slabs from Mantineia.

There followed statues of the Roman times, the types of which are attributed to Praxiteles, as well as certain works for which reservations, as to their attribution, have been expressed in research and in relevant bibliography.

The last unit was dedicated to works that are associated with the artistic activity of Praxiteles’ family members.

An extensive catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition.
